The walk to Santa Scolastica is the hike that leads you to discover the valley where the city rises, which represents the western limit of the Monti Sibillini National Park.The tour takes place on the perimeter of what was once a large lake and, during the hike, we will have the opportunity to stop at some points where there are important element of the territories: farms, impressive trees (including a centuries-old oak, probably the oldest in Umbria) and the natural area of the "marcite" (which is a grassfield covered in a thin layer of water), artificially created over 1000 years ago.During the visit of the town won't be possible to miss a taste of the typical "norcineria", namely, the production of cured meats of the area. From there, the view toward the Rocca Maggiore medieval castle is one of the best in the city, whose first historical records of the fortified structure date from 1173-1174 Through narrow alleys and medieval squares, you will reach Saint Rufino’s Cathedral and Saint Claire's Basilica. The morning will then head down to the Basilica of Saint Francis, famous throughout the world for its 13th-14th century frescoes.The frescoes were designed to illustrate episodes from the Bible to the people in the most effective way and to tell them about the life of St Francis, ignoring the Cistercian controversy about church decoration. In fact, in their artistic vision, the frescoes had to have a didactic role rather than an aesthetic one. The greatest painters of the time were involved in their creation: Cimabue, Cavallini and Giotto.After free time for lunch, in the afternoon you will explore Sanctuaries and Franciscan Sites outside Assisi by driver and guide.
